Whilst Spain dominated on the pitch, the BBC's sports department finished up it's coverage of euro 2012 with an emphatic six to one win over ITV.

After a bit of a critical mauling at the start of the group stage (mainly because of its decision to keep it's main presenting team in sunny Salford), the BBC took a grip on the tournament at the quarter final stage - putting Gary and the boys on a plane, and gaining the highest audience of euro 2012, a peak of 23 million for England's exit against Italy.

Needing to guarantee audiences for advertisers, meant that ITV chose to put more of their efforts on the group stage.

When dividing up the games between the two broadcasters, the selection process went as follows - first they tossed a coin, the beeb won the toss and chose the first pick of the quarter finals, effectively gambling on England getting that far. The next three picks were for England group games, ITV picking up two of them. Then ITV kinda took their eye off the ball by going for Ireland group games, allowing both of the semi finals to end up on BBC one. This effectively meant an early bath for Chiles and co. The Portugal/Spain semi final penalty shootout peaked at 13 million on BBC one.

This brings us to the final, the whole show on BBC one (1900-2215) averaged ten million viewers, compared to 1.7 million on ITV. For the match itself the BBC averaged 12.3 million (ITV 2 million), with a peak of 13.3 (ITV 2.2 million). A victory margin of six to one is the largest ever, in what may well be ITVs lowest rated weekend since it launched.
