6 cool things to watch on netflix uk this week

Transformers. Before the lame sequels; the first Michael Bay take on robots hitting robots is a fresh, funny and inventive action movie.

Modern Family.  Check out the first two seasons of the best sitcom on tv.  Not a bad episode to be found.

The Karate Kid.  The original and best version, which unlike the remake, actually features karate.

Bridge to Terabithia.  A surprisingly gritty story of childhood friendship, fantasy and loss.

The brilliantly bonkers Nicholas Cage cop movie.

Frank: Wilma, I promise you; whatever scum did this, not one man on this force will rest one minute until he's behind bars. Now, let's grab a bite to eat.

Back to the Future - original teaser trailer

A definitively eighties teaser trailer, for the greatest time travel movie.

six great things to watch on netflix uk this week

There has been much excitement over the revival of Arrested Development on Netflix this past weekend.  But what should you watch once you've binged on that virtual boxset?  Here are six other great things to watch on the streaming service this week...

The (possibly superior) American version of The Killing moves from C4 to Netflix for its third season, and each episode will be available the day after it debuts on AMC in the US.

Head back to the eighties with Explorers; and join a very young Ethan Hawk and River Phoenix as they build a spaceship.

With a lot of fanfare Sky launched its Sky Movies Disney channel earlier this year, providing great Disney movies old and new. About the same time, in a rather quieter move Netflix snapped up the UK streaming rights for much of the same content. It's true that Sky will have the latest Disney/Pixar movies first, but a lot of the older content is shared across the two platforms.  Perhaps the best of the Disney classics currently on Netflix is the heartbreaking Dumbo; meanwhile the best of the more recent releases is Pixar's modern masterpiece Wall-e.

A refreshing unsentimental look at what happens when a young guy is given a 50/50 chance of living.

Magic Mike is a trashy, glossy, exploitation flick of the finest kind.  Pardon the lame pun, and strip away the beautifully shot routines - and there is some solid storytelling here.  Most definitely one in the eye to all those critics that have dismissed the acting abilities of Mathew McConaughey, Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer in the past.

About Nicholas Hoult - his five greatest roles.

Nicholas Hoult is back in theaters, in the fun "Jack the Giant Slayer".  He equips himself well as Jack, though he does seem a bit too cool and unflappable to be a true action hero.  Here's a quick picture trawl through five of his greatest roles...

In Warm Bodies, he plays R, the zombie that falls in love with a girl-and wants to live again.

Hank McCoy/Beast in the awesome superhero reboot;  X-men: First Class.

As Kenny in A Single Man, he played the slightly sinister stalker of Colin Firth.

As Tony in skins (tv), Nick was part of the uber-talented first generation cast.

As Marcus in About a Boy, his incredible breakout role as the outcast boy, looking for a father figure.

Mark Kermode savages Danny Dyer - video

Danny Dyer's latest movie, Run For Your Wife, has opened with a miserable £602 at the UK box office.  The movie has been universally panned, not least by Mark Kermode, below.

Oscars 2013 - what should win, what will win?

best actress in a supporting role
Anne Hathaway - Les Misérables
Perhaps the easiest catagory to predict, because Anne was simply stunning in Les Misérables. Amy Adams is always great, but The Master was a thunderous bore.  If Lincoln wins big then Sally Field could be a contender, but the smart money is on Anne.

best actor in a supporting role
Tommy Lee Jones - Lincoln
An incredible list of nominees for this category, with Phillip Seymore Hoffman (The Master), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Alan Arkin (Argo) and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) fighting it out with Tommy for the prize.  For the reason given above, The Master shouldn't be winning anything.  Waltz's role was awesome, but it may be a little too similar his work in Inglorious Basterds to truly stand out.  The Bafta success of Argo means it shouldn't be discounted.  A De Niro win would always be welcome, but seems unlikely.  Tommy should win.

best actress in a leading role
Naomi Watts - The Impossible
Another tough category to pick.  One would hope that Jessica Chastain is in with a chance, but there seems to be some hostility to Zero Dark Thirty in Hollywood.  Jeniffer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) would be a worthy winner, but The Impossible is an incredible achievement, and deserves the recognition that  a Naomi win would give it.

best actor in a leading role
Daniel Day Lewis - Lincoln
 It has to be Daniel...

Directing
Steven Spielberg - Lincoln
Having widened the field in the best picture category for up-to ten pictures (nine this year), this obviously has meant that half of them  don't get a nom for directing.  The Academy should change this.  With Les Misérables, Argo, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty not nominated, Stephen looks the most worthy winner.

Best Picture
(Check out a list of the best picture nominations here)

It's an impressive list, and the impressive Lincoln will probably get the statue- but the epic scale of Les Misérables should be rewarded with the big prize.  Sadly the academy rarely rewards musicals.  Of the rest Argo may have a shot, and I'd love to see Quentin pick up a Best Picture statue for Django Unchained, but I got a feeling it may be Lincoln's night.  Thankfully it's a great movie.
