The Lion King 3D

After all the hype, it really does seem that Mark Kermode was right, and the gimmick that is 3D is in serious decline.  Just 43% of the US opening weekend audience for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 chose to see it in 3D.  Obviously the 3D beast is not yet dead, but hopefully it may be on the way out.

In the meantime we have a new category of 3D movie hitting cinemas.  In addition to movies made in 3D (Avatar) and new 2D movies converted into 3D (Alice in wonderland), we now have some archive 2D movies being re-released in 3D.  Next April we will see Titanic 3D set sail into cinemas; and this autumn we have The Lion King 3D.

Firstly I should explain that I think the movie itself is great.  The last true classic to be released by Disney, before PIXAR shook everything up.  The film remains compelling and funny with some fantastic characters.  It is punctuated by great songs and some truly heartbreaking moments.  Thankfully, the dire Morning Report song that had been present on recent home entertainment releases, is once again absent.  The 3D adds absolutely nothing,  I cant think of a single moment of the movie that was enhanced by it.  It sadly becomes distracting and actually detracts from what should be a great experience of seeing a classic movie on the big screen.
