20 great movies from 2012

Here are twenty of the best movies, released in the UK in 2012.

super movies

2012 was a big year for Superhero movies- Christian Bale bowed out at Batman, in the visually stunning - but slightly plodding The Dark Knight Rises; Disney proved that Marvel is safe in their hands with the excellent Avengers Assemble (Star Wars fans should take note);  Andrew Garfield took up the webbed mantle in the brilliant, but under-rated, The Amazing Spider-man.  The most original take on the superhero genre was from the much smaller movie Chronicle.

funny movies?

2012 was not the greatest year for comedy at the multiplex.  The once great American Pie franchise returned with a dire fourth instalment, American ReunionTed had great potential, but simply wasn't funny enough.  Amongst the rest of the comedy drek, three great movies really stand out:  The Muppets was a fresh, funny take on the puppeted ones, definitely the best muppet movie since Muppet Christmas Carol.   Channing Tatum finally won over the critics in the awesome 21 Jump Street.  And the Britcom Sightseers found comedy gold in the world of homicidal caravaners.

Dramatic stuff

A great year for drama.  End of Watch was the best cop movie since Heat; Stephen Spielberg gave us a beautiful, kid friendly, war movie in War Horse.  Ben Affleck proved he is becoming an exceptional director with Argo.  Emma Stone gave another great performance in Silver Linings Playbook.  George Clooney dealt with family troubles in paradise, in the Oscar nominated The Descendants.

action!
In a great year for the thirty-something actor, Joseph Gordon Levitt played a convincing young Bruce Willis in the thrilling Looper.  Another Nolan favorite, Tom Hardy could be found in the prohibition era movie, Lawless - which also boasted a very nice soundtrack.  Bond returned and took over $1bn, in one of the greatest 007 movies.

teenage kicks
One major teen franchise bowed out, and a new one rose up.  The final Twilight movie was a fitting end to the much maligned franchise.  The final twist owed much to Final Destination, but it was well executed and provided a thrilling climax.  The Hunger Games was an amazing introduction to the series, with Jeniffer Lawrence as a convincing Heroine.  Anna Kendrick proved she is incredibly talented in the exceptional teen comedy Pitch Perfect - this is what Glee should be...  Also on a musical note, the little welsh flick Hunky Dory was a very tidy movie.

best movie of 2012...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is the best movie of 2012.  An exceptional teen flick set in 1991, it stars Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief) as Charlie, a troubled kid, who is just starting his freshman year at high school.  With great support from Ezra Miller-and a convincingly American accented Emma Watson, this movie is truly awesome!
