Whilst both The Voice uk and Britains Got Talent managed to boost their audiences by about 600,000 viewers apeice this weekend, the news was not so good for ITV's £11m retelling of the Titanic story. Its audience slumped from 6.3m (ex +1) to under 4m.
These figures prove two things, firstly that itvs spin (repeated by dumb tv critics everywhere), that the voice drops like a stone in most territories was nonsense . Secondly, that Titanic is a fundamentally flawed project. Whilst getting the writer of Downtown Abbey to dramatise one of the greatest tragedies ever may sound like TV gold, it's execution is as full of holes as the rusty hull of the ship itself.
Trying to tell a story with a staggering 89 characters across four episodes, would be challenging enough, but to tell the same story, four times, from four different perspectives is crazy. You simply won't know any of the characters well enough, to care about them when the ship sinks. And why would you want to watch the same thing happen four times?
