Facebook reaches one billion monthly users

Despite the slump in its share price, Facebook has reason to celebrate today, with the announcement that there are now one billion people actively using the service each month.  In a status update, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said:

This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.
If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.
Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.  I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.

The BBC reported that Facebook users have generated 1.13 trillion "likes", 219 billion photos and 17 billion location check-ins.  Mobile is a growth area, with 600 million users now accessing the site via a mobile device - up 48 million from 552 million in June this year.
