best actress in a supporting role
Anne Hathaway - Les Misérables |
Perhaps the easiest catagory to predict, because Anne was simply stunning in Les Misérables. Amy Adams is always great, but The Master was a thunderous bore. If Lincoln wins big then Sally Field could be a contender, but the smart money is on Anne.
best actor in a supporting role
Tommy Lee Jones - Lincoln |
An incredible list of nominees for this category, with Phillip Seymore Hoffman (The Master), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Alan Arkin (Argo) and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) fighting it out with Tommy for the prize. For the reason given above, The Master shouldn't be winning anything. Waltz's role was awesome, but it may be a little too similar his work in Inglorious Basterds to truly stand out. The Bafta success of Argo means it shouldn't be discounted. A De Niro win would always be welcome, but seems unlikely. Tommy should win.
best actress in a leading role
Naomi Watts - The Impossible |
Another tough category to pick. One would hope that Jessica Chastain is in with a chance, but there seems to be some hostility to Zero Dark Thirty in Hollywood. Jeniffer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) would be a worthy winner, but The Impossible is an incredible achievement, and deserves the recognition that a Naomi win would give it.
best actor in a leading role
Daniel Day Lewis - Lincoln |
It has to be Daniel...
Directing
Steven Spielberg - Lincoln |
Having widened the field in the best picture category for up-to ten pictures (nine this year), this obviously has meant that half of them don't get a nom for directing. The Academy should change this. With Les Misérables, Argo, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty not nominated, Stephen looks the most worthy winner.
Best Picture
(Check out a list of the best picture nominations here)
It's an impressive list, and the impressive Lincoln will probably get the statue- but the epic scale of Les Misérables should be rewarded with the big prize. Sadly the academy rarely rewards musicals. Of the rest Argo may have a shot, and I'd love to see Quentin pick up a Best Picture statue for Django Unchained, but I got a feeling it may be Lincoln's night. Thankfully it's a great movie.
